In the beginning, as taught by Hippocrates, such maladies were described in clinical terms without mention of the means to prevent or treat infective pathol- ogies. At this time, it was thought that such diseases were a consequence of an imbal- ance between natural forces inside and out- side the body. Any available therapies aimed to correct these imbalances. The second stage occurred, largely, over the course of the eigh- teenth and nineteenth centuries. It was during these times that more systematic classifica- tions of disease were developed and the early Hippocratic doctrines concerning fever and disease were debunked.
